Tokamachi City Museum

Highly recommended to visit before touring around Tokamachi City. At this museum, visitors can experience a tour with an expert on the area. It may take around 45 min to fully digest all of the information here at this museum. Visitors can learn about the history of the area as well as the origins of the city name, how people used to live in this area and many other interesting facts. A couple of things to note about the city:

Tokamachi has the most snowfall in Japan
It celebrated the first ever snow festival in Japan (even before the Sapporo snow festival)
Tokamachi kanji characters (十日町) literally mean “ten day market” because the markets in the city would only open every 10 days due to the heavy snowfall
It is one of the big 3 within the kimono industry creating some of the highest quality kimonos in Japan
